If any possible risk of ill health or accident exists.

Example:
- Metallic waste – needles, scalpels, cannulae, knife blades etc.
- Glass waste – broken lab.glass, pasteur pipettes etc.
- Plastic waste – pipette tips, eppendorf tubes, etc.

Three different types:
Type 1 - Non contaminated
Type 2 - Chemically contaminated
Type 3 - Infectious
